Public spaces represent an important social infrastructure that facilitates interaction and empathy, community networking and civic engagement.
As a result of the pursuit of economic development and the morphological characteristics of the territory, public space in Hong Kong has become a marginal and secondary element of the city’s structure.

Due to the lack of a comprehensive vision among different Government Department, the city has many underutilized spaces that in fact could represent an opportunity to provide new accessible places for sustainable development. Cities are now starting to look at the potentiality of these undesignated spaces within the urban fabric, residual areas such as back alleys, buffer zones, and vacant land.

UrbanactionsHK symposium aims to promote a critical debate about innovative ideas for revitalizing public spaces, promoting a comparative discussion of urban practices and urban regeneration strategies.
